PJ NY

I love collaborations between two great musicians or a musician and their contemporaries.  Nothing more is evident in the friendship and or relationship between Neil Young and Eddie Vedder.  Eddie even calls him family.  "Uncle Neil and I love working together."  These are the kind of friendships I like.  Another great example is at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Geddy Lee said he play bass for the absent Chris Squire.  Chris passed away the year before and it was only fitting that Geddy who admired YES decided to fill in.

With Neil and Eddie their friendship grew in Pearl Jam's early years.  When Pearl Jam was big on rotation on MTV.  They showed up and played the video music awards and asked Neil to join them on a tune.  The rest is history as they say.  That musical meeting is ingrained in my brain.  It's a great moment in Rock history.

I'm a big Neil Young fan and I remember the anticipation that came with getting this when it came out.  I felt like this was a collaboration that should have happened and looking back, it should have been more then one album.  I think of Pearl Jam is Neil's modern day Crazy Horse.  You can hear their efforts with Neil fun and exciting.  Reading the info on another website you can tell their chemistry was infectious.  It was quick paced too.  It took four days to record this album.

In re-listening to the album I felt the album was nostalgic in a good way.  It maybe be twenty three years old, but hearing it sounds like it could be recorded today.  Neil and Pearl Jam did not loose sight of the rock roots.  All the worked their way out of simple riffs and melody.

In conclusion, it's an album that is one of the coolest collaborations.  If you love Neil Young, it's up your alley, if you like Pearl Jam, the same goes for that.  My only issue with this great pairing is that I wish it came with a follow up album and or live collection.  As you listen to the album it truly shows that Neil's blueprint is all over Pearl Jam's music.  The other issue, why are there not more of these albums.  I see a few albums with guests, those a cool and all, but how about a whole album of two great musicians working together as one unit.  Hearing this album will have you wondering too.  Enjoy!
