Wim's End of the World
While trying to find a cure for his wife's blindness, Dr. Faber has created a device that allows the user to send images directly to the brain enabling the blind to see. The creation and operation of such a machine is in stark contrast to a deteriorating global situation, where the continued existence of mankind is under threat from a nuclear powered satellite that is falling toward earth. That is the basic premise the film by Wim Wenders Until the End of the World.
I've always been a fan of Wim Wenders Films. He has such great ones as Paris Texas, Wings of Desire, Faraway, So Close, The American Friend, and Buena Vista Social Club. The films are a great study in film and learning about Film. The direction and cinematography and of course the soundtracks. Each have a unique and great spin on them. Until the End of the World is no different. It was the first soundtrack I bought of his films. Each artist on the soundtrack I loved. I was just starting listening to CAN then and it was a unique introduction to them.
When you see the line up on the soundtrack it's basically a great who's who of 80's and early 90's Rock Icons. Some modern or almost modern like Nick Cave, and Depeche Mode and R.E.M and some long time associations with Rock like Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads and Patti Smith. It's a mix of some great artists and whats the bonus is all except the U2 are new songs. I really think even the U2 song is better then the one on the album Achtung Baby. Even the Elvis Costello cover of The Kinks Days is pretty awesome. All the music too has a futuristic feel to it. To myself, it's like all Wim Wender's soundtracks, all very cool and worth repeated listenings.
This soundtrack is one I go to often. Every time I play it still sounds fresh to the ears. The songs still sound like they would be part of today's music that I like and listen to. If your fan of any these people on this soundtrack it's still worth exploring. Something of note, this was the last song the Talking Heads ever recorded as a group. Great album that should not be missed. Check it out.
