I know what your thinking this Genesis album is an official release. Well it is if you want to spend like $300 or more for it. It is available as part of a Box Set by Genesis of their live recordings. The Box Set collects the live Genesis albums from 1973-2007. It's all the official releases from that time period. Included are
Genesis Live (1973),
Seconds Out from 1977,
Three Sides Live from 1981,
The Way We Walk from 1992 and
Live Over Europe from 2007. The bonus is a Live show from 1973 at the Rainbow. The problem was you could only get this in the box, and even then it was not complete. The
Live at Rainbow showed the Genesis fan the power of their early live performances. Songs were not four or five minute ditty's but songs longer then seven or more.
This is the Genesis I admired and loved. Like my post about
Selling England By The Pound, this was Progressive Rock at it's finest. This is the Genesis that barely gets played on the radio. If it does get played on the radio it's those left of the dial stations that can play the long cuts without a break for a commercial or station ID. These are the songs that need charts and an admission from the artist saying they forgot how to play it correctly. To me this was Peter Gabriel's finest moments in his early career.
I stumbled upon this
Live at the Rainbow while looking for other Genesis music. For the longest time this era was music that was easy get because of the connection and often bootleg (which I will write about another time)
Genesis live At The BBC that has many of these same songs in full length and has some fun and witty banter between songs. The Rainbow show has a very enthusiastic crowd who seems very psyched to see their favorite band play for them. Genesis is in top form and Steve Hackett, Tony Banks are on top of their game with their guitar and keyboard playing. Phil Collins is at this moment doing what he does so well, play the damn' drums.
This live set should have been put out as a separate release. It would have converted new Genesis fans and the old fans would have flashbacks of a band that was one of the best from the era when Progressive Rock. They were a dominate force with the likes of ELP, YES, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd. What is great about this that a lot of this music on this show was what would be a typical Genesis show in 1973. The only thing missing would be "The Knife" a song from Trespass and a one or two others. This was a band on top of their game and the best was yet to come with their album Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
Aside from the music that Genesis played on stage there it was always a treat what kind of costume Peter Gabriel would have on. Not only the funny looking costume his stage banter between songs would always be a highlight. I only wish there was video footage of his look and his banter between the songs. It was odd, but all so cool to experience. The only nowadays we can see this is if you see a French tribute band called Musical Box. They are like the tribute bands, tribute band. Every thing from Peter's costumes, stage banter and his placement on stage are recreated exactly like back in 1973.
So why did I subject this post as a Bootleg Series? Well long before the official Live Box Set came out. Genesis fans would circulate this show to their friends and to fans who loved the early years but did not want to spend the money on a forty-seven minute small piece of a Genesis show that did not even include the whole twenty-three minute opus "Supper's Ready." Even worse hearing the awesome mellotron of Tony Banks or crisp guitar solos of Steve Hackett would be chopped up and left on the editing room floor. This show has it all and you don't need the shortened official release or the large box set that is at the writing selling for $467.00. Just watch out some of the version on the internet don't have a complete show. Let me know if you want a copy. I can help. Enjoy!!
